Mud, Glorious Mud!

We recently took part in the Eastnor Castle Mud Run to raise money for local charity Megan Baker House. Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored us - we did it!

The story of the Beatles as you’ve never seen it before

Journey through the Beatles years – from the band’s first ever gig at the Cavern Club to the release of their final album Let It Be – in a visual exploration of their evolution from four young men to one of the greatest bands the world has ever seen.

Orphans Calendar as desktop wallpaper

Due to popular demand ... well, anyway, we're making each month of our 2016 'Essential Dates' calendar available as a wallpaper for your computer. So instead of looking up to see the real calendar hanging on your wall you can keep your eyes pinned on your computer. Or if you are on the move, keep it on your tablet. No need to thank us, all part of the service.

THE ORPHANS CALENDAR - NOW THE YEAR CAN BEGIN

Every year Orphans produce a calendar. Sometimes it is ready in time for the New Year! In recent years it has built quite a following with our customers, many of whom anticipate it's arrival and are eager to see if it is a notch up on previous years. So here at Orphans we've realised that the pressure is back on us. We can't just serve up 12 landscapes of Herefordshire scenery.

Social responsibility

The notion of corporate social responsibility was probably not uppermost in the mind of Henry Stanley Newman when, in 1873, he saw the benefits of providing the orphans in his care with a printing press. In these early days Orphans Press didn't need to look beyond its own front door for worthy candidates to support.

Green credentials

We are very conscious of doing what we can to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Orphans on film

We are all for marketing initiatives promoting Herefordshire. We did have to think twice when it came to the notion of appearing on film though - we're quite a bashful bunch really. We finally overcame our trepidation and now we see the quality of the 'Behind the Door in Herefordshire' video (below) we are glad we did.

New website heads up the rankings

Fiona Davies from Woodlands Self Store has kindly shared her experience of making sure her site is well positioned in Google, an important objective when this newly set up business approached Orphans to develop the website. Here she explains what worked for them.

Mailmark accreditation for Orphans

A good number of our customers like us to mail out what we print for them. As much as anything it avoids the need to ship on to a mailing house. So over the years we have developed our service, from the purchase of automated envelope inserting machines and polywrap lines to address printers and software designed to maximise Royal Mail discounts for larger mailings.

The origins of Orphans Press

A well-renowned Quaker, Henry Stanley Newman, opened the Leominster Orphan Home on the 20th August 1869. Children from mainly industrialised areas of the UK found their way to the Home and the prospect of a new life in a rural area.

Vibrant 7 colour printing with our indigo

4 colour (CMYK) printing on the Indigo is superb and the liquid inks (as opposed to toner) produce an unrivalled litho-like quality. Can it get better? Well, actually, yes! Our Indigo has facility for 3 extra colours which with a little creative imagination can make all the difference to your job.

Elan Exhibition - pulling it all together

The Elan Valley visitor centre had been missing a cornerstone of any popular attraction ... an Exhibition! It was nice then for us to be asked to put together the new exhibition, 'This is Elan'. This was a true team effort. Ruth Lloyd produced great content, researching the incredible history of the Elan Valley, not least the building of the dams and  the diversity of nature and wildlife.

Web design as detailed as the shoes themselves

Our friends Sara and Nick crackle with new ideas. The concept of Billy Ruffian (there's a great story behind the name) is all theirs. So too are the shoes, beautifully designed and hand made. Not very many of them, but so nice they are building a loyal following.

Bespoke systems for... us!

Happily we're generally quite busy working flat out on our customers' behalf. But periodically we come up for air and can slot in a little development for ourselves. Believe me there's a lot more we'd like to do but such is our unswerving dedication to customer work! Generally the context is that you look at off the shelf options available on the market.

Bespoke production data software

We get on famously with our good friends at www.theplayhousecompany.co.uk. Growth in their business was making it harder to keep track of numbers in terms of time spent on projects and also stock consumption and replenishment.

Software at the HEART

We have a very long association with www.heartsystems.co.uk.

Paid for ads - paying their way?

Paying for traffic to your site is not likely to be an ambition but for many businesses it is a necessary path to reach customers who turn to Google to find sites which do just what you do. Just to increase the inevitability of the decision the proportion of paid for ads Google displays has also increased.

Can we recommend a good photographer?

There's nothing which drains the colour from our designer's faces more then when a customer declares that 'I've got the pics with me ... on my phone!' It's just that we've worked on many a site where for budgetary reasons (mainly) we've had to head down the stock library route. Try as we might there's something unmistakeably familiar about these images!

Print or online mail? Try both!

In an always-connected electronic world there remains a lot of value in high quality, well timed printed mailings.

Basic SEO for website owners

There are lots of little things that website owners can do to give their site the best shot at outperforming its competition in search engines.

Kenya orphanage visit 2013

This was not your average half term holiday.

Leominster's marquee- fit for a prince

Memories of Diamond Day, July 11th 2012 When Leominster was invited to showcase it's wares to the Royal Family there was only one thing to do ... call for Helen! And so it came to pass that a willing group of volunteers gave of their all to ensure Prince Philip left with an abiding impression.

Our first book launch

At the time of writing this article we don't know whether our inaugeral title as book publishers, 'While it is Yet Day', has been an extraordinary sales success ... or not! What we do know is that together with author Averil Opperman we couldn't have done much more to announce it's arrival.

Recycled paper stock

Here at Orphans we have access to a wide variety of paper stocks. If you are looking for something specific for your next print job then the chances are we can source the perfect material.

Let's Get Personal

If you recognise that your customers are different you may see the potential to mail them something which reflects what makes them so different. The Indigo is capable of linking with your database and varying the content of every sheet. At the simplest or most common level it can be addresses from your spreadsheet so the mailing item is ready for the post.
